How to check if a baby product has been recalled

It takes about a minute, it's free, and it rules out the one thing you really don't want to buy second-hand.

A phone held over a used pram, a search in progress on screen, with the pram's dusty compliance plate below it.

The 60-second routine

  1. Find the model and brand. Look on the label, the moulded plastic, or the underside of the item. Note the model name and number.
  2. Search the ACCC Product Safety recalls database. It's the official Australian source at productsafety.gov.au/recalls. Type in the brand or product.
  3. Check for a match. If the exact model appears, read what the recall is for and whether there's a fix. If it's a safety recall with no remedy, don't buy it.
  4. Confirm it meets the standard. For regulated items like cots and car seats, check the compliance mark while you're at it.

Do it before you pay, not after

The check only helps if you do it before money changes hands. If you're buying in person, do it while you're standing there. If you're buying on a marketplace, ask the seller for the model and check before you commit.

Register for future alerts

The ACCC also lets you register products so you're told if they're recalled later. Worth doing for the big items you keep for years.
