Baby product recalls: what every parent should know

Recalls sound alarming, but they're a system working as intended. Here's how to use it to your advantage.

Recalls are common, and that's reassuring

The ACCC Product Safety recalls databaselists hundreds of recalls in its baby and toddler products category, a cumulative figure in the high hundreds built up over many years. That number can look scary, but it's a sign the system is doing its job: spotting faults and getting products fixed or off the shelves.

Worth knowing: that count is cumulative and historical, not a list of currently dangerous items on sale. Most recalls come with a remedy, such as a repair or refund.

What tends to get recalled

Across the years, recalls have covered a broad range: prams and strollers with pinch or entrapment risks, toys with small parts or button batteries, sleep products, carriers, and more. Toys are actually the single largest recall category on the database overall, which matters for second-hand toy buyers too.

The three habits that keep you clear

  • Check before you buy. Search any second-hand item's model against the ACCC recalls database first. It takes a minute.
  • Register the big items. The ACCC lets you register products so you're alerted if they're recalled later.
  • Act on alerts. If something you own is recalled, follow the remedy. Don't keep using it in the meantime.

A recall isn't a reason to fear second-hand

It's a reason to do one quick check. New items get recalled too. The difference is simply that a second-hand buyer has to run the check themselves.
