Winter layering for kids without buying new

A simple layering plan keeps kids warm through an Australian winter, and almost all of it can be pre-loved.

A child in cosy winter layers outdoors, a beanie and a puffer jacket, cheeks pink from the cold, happy.

Layers beat one big coat

Kids run hot, then get cold the moment they stop. Layers let them adjust: peel off at the playground, pile back on for the walk home. It's warmer, more flexible, and it means no single expensive item has to do all the work.

The three-layer plan

  • Base layer. A snug singlet or thermal top and bottoms to hold warmth close. Merino is lovely if you find it second-hand.
  • Middle layer. A jumper or fleece for insulation. This is the easy-on, easy-off workhorse.
  • Outer layer. A weatherproof jacket for wind and rain. Buy this a little big so it lasts and fits over the layers.
  • Extremities. Beanie, gloves and warm socks lose the most heat, and cost the least to cover.

Why winter gear is a smart second-hand buy

Winter clothes are worn for one short season, then outgrown by the next. That means a lot of pre-loved jackets and jumpers are barely used. Quality outerwear is expensive new and holds up brilliantly, so a good used one is both a real saving and easy to resell next year.

Shop ahead of the cold

The best pre-loved winter gear appears as the season turns. Grab next size's jacket early, and list last winter's before everyone else remembers they need one.

One thing to buy well

Spend your effort on the outer jacket, since it does the hard work against wind and rain. A good pre-loved one beats a cheap new one every time. Everything else, layer up from the second-hand pile.
